12 most exciting games of GamesCom 2022

This year, the video game trade show GamesCom will no longer take place only on the Internet, but also physically again, in the exhibition halls in Cologne. Numerous large and small games will be announced and shown. Among them are also many exciting science fiction titles. We have collected twelve of the most interesting sci-fi video games for you.

The last two years, GamesCom took place only on the Internet due to the Corona pandemic. But this year, Europe’s largest and loudest video game trade show opened its doors again to visitors, who have now been squeezing through the exhibition halls in Cologne since August 24. Thousands are currently taking advantage of the opportunity to get their first glimpse of new games at the numerous booths of large manufacturers and small developers, or even to play them. Among them are numerous titles that are located in the classic as well as in the abstract sense of science fiction: sinister productions such as the horror torture The Callisto Protocol, avant-garde action works such as. Atomic Heart, silent puzzle adventures like We Stay Behind… but also bizarre multiplayer studs like Killer Clowns From Outer Space.

Scars Above

It was totally unexpected. One day, a giant alien artifact, the Metahedron, appears in orbit around Earth. Scientists are sent to investigate the extraterrestrial visitor. Kate Ward is one of them. After an approach with a spaceship, she wakes up in an alien landscape, which is peppered with floating boulders, ruins of buildings and lots of aggressive creatures. From a third-person perspective, Kate must navigate the inhospitable environment to find her companions, solve puzzles, and defend herself against the alien threats. According to the developers, the game is inspired by Mad Head Games, the game is inspired by classic science fiction works, as well as successful video games such as Dark Souls and Returnal.

Scars Above is scheduled for release in late 2022/2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Off the Grid

Actually, Neill Blomkamp is best known for science fiction films like District 9 and Elysium is well known. For two years, however, he has also been known as Chief Visionary at the Frankfurt Studio Gunzilla Games, which is working on the science fiction multiplayer title Off the Grid works. This is set in a visibly dystopian future where large corporations fight a war on a tropical island. And that with bionically equipped soldiers. But it’s not easy – because the Kharakian people are not alone in space. In order to advance and survive, a fleet must be built, battles fought and new technologies developed. Almost 20 years after the second part of the Homeworld -The story is now to be retold in the Homeworld saga. For now the Kharakians must face a threat that has already destroyed numerous planets and now also threatens the people of the space community. Once again, battles must be fought and the secrets of long-dead spacefaring species must be unlocked.

Homeworld 3 is scheduled for release in early 2023 for PC.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Back in 1988, the wacky science fiction horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which is exactly what it sounds like. Nasty clowns charge at a meteorite impact near the small town of Crescent Cove and begin killing and eating the residents. The only hope is the town’s teenagers, who no one seems to believe the abstruse story about the alien invaders. In the video game, this weird scenario is meant for fast-paced multiplayer fun along the lines of Dead by Daylight can be found here. Seven players each compete as teenagers against three of the bloodthirsty clowns, who have different abilities, advantages and disadvantages.

We Stay Behind

A comet is headed for Earth – more precisely, for Laburnum Creek, a tranquil resort town nestled between mountains and forests. But the residents don’t even think about leaving their homes and heading for safety. Writer Laura Tanner wants to find out why. To do so, she goes to the small village in her camper van. There, the player must lead her around, seek conversations with the inhabitants, crack small puzzles and draw conclusions from the discoveries. The video game from the German studio Backwoods Entertainment mixes classic adventure mechanics with elements from walking simulators, borrows ideas from TV classics such as Twin Peaks and draws a captivatingly idyllic natural setting.

We Stay Behind is scheduled for release in 2022/2023 for PC and Mac.

Under The Waves

The North Sea is already an enchanting place – and a place that still holds many mysteries. In Under The Waves from the developers of the French Parallel Studio, marine explorer Stan sets out to explore from a small underwater station in the 1970s. With a mini-submarine and diving suit, he goes down into the depths. He swims alongside whales and turtles, discovers relics like damaged submarines, but also experiences strange visions that he can’t quite explain. There may be more going on beneath the waves of the North Sea than meets the eye.

Dune: Awakening

It was only last year that director Denis Villeneuve made his debut with Dune brought one of the most influential science fiction stories ever back to the big screen. Norwegian developer Funcom has now announced an online game that will be based on the style of the film and its interpretation of the Frank Herbert novel. Dune: Awakening is not supposed to be an online role-playing game, but a survival experience like Conan Exiles and Ark: Survival Evolved. Players must fight for survival alone and together in the dreary climate of the planet Araki by gathering resources, building a shelter, forging alliances, and fighting against hostile factions.

Dune: Awakening is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

System Shock

For seven years, developer Nightdive Studios, which specializes in remakes of classic video games, has been working on an elaborate remake of System Shock. In the mix of action-adventure and role-playing game once released in 1994, a hacker awakens on a space station to find that the crazed AI Shodan has taken control and turned the human inhabitants into remote-controlled cyborgs. For the remake, the studio is translating the original’s pixel graphics into a lavish 3D setting that retains the original’s texture and sophistication, but modernizes the speed and atmosphere.

System Shock is scheduled for release in late 2022 for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Floodland

Sea levels are rising. It’s causing sandy beaches to disappear and cities to sink. In Floodland a large part of the world has already perished – because mankind did nothing against it. Nevertheless, a part of the humanoid population has survived. More or less. In the build-up tactics game from Vile Monarch, the goal is to make sure it stays that way. Small camps and settlements are built and expanded, survivors are sent out to gather building materials and food. Technologies are developed and also rules are adopted that determine how the community lives together – and influence whether life after the flood becomes utopia or dystopia.

Floodland is scheduled for release on November 15, 2022 for PC.

Atomic Heart

It’s a surreal world that the role-playing first-person shooter Atomic Heart presented. For in its history, futuristic technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, drones and even antigravity devices were already invented in the first half of the 20th century. The Soviet Union is a high-tech world power here – but one in which things go wrong. So KGB agent P-3 is dispatched to a remote region of the country to infiltrate a research and development station that has apparently been taken over by murderous robots. The station and its mechanized inhabitants present themselves as a wild mix of retro-futurism and Soviet Art Nouveau.

The Callisto Protocol

Almost 15 years ago appeared Dead Space, a survival horror game in which an alien force transforms the settlers of a planet and the crew of a spaceship into bizarre monsters. Dead Space has cult status. With The Callisto Protocol its former developers have a spiritual successor in the works that is supposed to creep, shock and disturb. Here, the player takes control of Jacob Lee, an inmate of the Black Iron prison on Jupiter’s moon Callisto, which is apparently being invaded by an alien invasion. Sneaking, shooting and punching, Lee must navigate through the bowels of Black Iron, where he must realize that all the happenings are apparently not entirely random.

Outcast 2: A New Beginning

Outcast was one of the most elaborate video games of its time, but is still remembered by few. In the action adventure released in 1999, a soldier named Cutter Slade travels through a wormhole to a parallel world whose inhabitants he must free from a hideous tyrant. Outcast was widely praised for its visuals and inventiveness, but flopped. A planned sequel never appeared. Until now. With Outcast 2: A New Beginning a team led by the developers of the original wants to continue the story over two decades later. Now the parallel world of Adelpha and its peaceful inhabitants are once again threatened, which is why Cutter has to intervene once again.
