Santa Monica, USA – Call of Duty (also known as CoD) is a video game series from publisher Activision. Call of Duty is a shooter, or first-person shooter, because you play from the first-person perspective in the game. CoD is not only very successful for Activision, but is also one of the most successful game franchises compared to the entire computer games market.

What is the Call of Duty series about?

In all Call of Duty parts, you play in the role of a soldier, and you always find yourself in a theater of war. In the first part of Call of Duty, which was developed by Infinity Ward at the time and published by Activision in 2003, the scenario is set in World War II.

Most parts of Call of Duty consist of a linear single-player mode and a multiplayer mode. The war scenarios in the different titles can either take place in the past, such as CoD WWII, but also take place in futuristic settings.

Call of Duty main game 2003

The first Call of Duty was first released on the PC on November 6, 2003. This was followed by versions for macOS, Nokia N-Gage, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 called “Call of Duty Classic”.

The title is set in World War II and as a player you take on the role of various Allied soldiers to, among other things, land at Normandy as an American soldier or liberate Stalingrad under the Russian flag. Call of Duty has been awarded the title “Game of the Year” several times.

The title received an add-on in 2004 with Call of Duty United Offensive. The expansion contained new weapons on new maps and also offered vehicles such as tanks that could be driven with several players.

Call of Duty 2

Call of Duty 2 was released in Germany on November 3, 2005 and, like the first part, was also implemented by the developer studio Infinity Ward. Call of Duty 2 is also set in World War II, with four soldiers from three countries fighting against the Germans. This title is the first to use anti-cheat software PunkBuster, with which cheats could be detected and the players in question were then banned via serial number.

Again, there was a multiplayer mode with Headquarters, Catpure the Flag, Search and Destroy, as well as Deathmatch and Team Dreathmatch modes.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a console-only title and takes a special position, since it’s the first time the concept of CoD 1 and CoD 2 is changed. Here you only play with a single character. Call of Duty 3

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

The fourth part of Call of Duty is the first title in the Modern Warfare series. Until now, the action of all Call of Duty games took place in the past. With Modern Warfare, you are now in an alternate present or near future. The developer of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is Infinity Ward and the title was released by Activision on November 8, 2007. Call of Duty: World at War

Like Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty: World at War has been implemented by the developer studio Treyarch. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

At the end of 2008, the continuation of the Modern Warfare series was announced by Activision. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was developed by Infinity Ward and was released on November 10, 2009 for Windows, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and later also for Nintendo DS and MacOS, making it the sixth installment in the Call of Duty series. The cost of developing the title is said to have been around $50 million.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has many innovations, especially in the multiplayer mode. For example, experience points (XP) could be collected for the first time in order to advance in rank and unlock weapons and accessories. Shooting series and special abilities (Perks) can also be unlocked this way.

The lack of dedicated servers is also new in CoD:MW2, as one player at a time now hosts the game in multiplayer. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019).

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has campaign, co-op and multiplayer modes. Many maps from previous parts can be found again, such as Shipment or Crash. CoD:MW is the very first game to feature cross-play, where players from different platforms can play together. Call of Duty Modern Warfare also introduces the Battle Royale mode Warzone in – Season 2, where up to 200 players can compete against each other on the map Verdansk.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty Warzone is the battle royale spin-off of Call of Duty Modern Warfare. However, the title is also playable as a stand-alone variant and can be installed via the Battle.net client. In Call of Duty Warzone, up to 200 players compete against each other on one map (Caldera – which is a fictional island in the Pacific Ocean). Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty Warzone 2: With the announcement of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for 2022, Activision has also planned a revamped experience for Call of Duty Warzone. Call of Duty League

Activsion has launched the Call of Duty League. This is a worldwide e-sports league consisting of 12 professional teams representing cities across North America and Europe. About Call of Duty

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (stylized as Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII) will be the latest game in the Call of Duty series. It is expected to be first released on October 12, 2018 and, as usual, will be developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. It will be available for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. Unlike its predecessors, the PC version will be distributed via Activision-Blizzard’s Battle.net download platform.

Unlike previous titles in the Black Ops series, Black Ops 4 will not have a traditional single-player campaign. However, the setting of the multiplayer mode is set between the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Black Ops III, and some of the specialists from Black Ops III, such as Erin “Battery” Baker, will also return in Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – Review

It’s no coincidence that in every best-of of the most impressive levels in the Call of Duty series, an above-average number of entries come from the first Modern Warfare. This game is a string of brilliant moments and, for me, a work of art, a master class in game design.On the surface, Modern Warfare’s campaign is all pace, bombast and explosions. But: In between, there is also room for comparatively quiet moments, such as the still legendary Prypiat level with its ghostly atmosphere or the impressively staged death of a character.

The build-up of tension is unparalleled, from the shocking prologue from the perspective of a father of the country being chauffeured to execution, to the iconic training level (“What kind of stupid name is Soap?”), to the hunt for the missing nuclear warhead, which culminates in the breathtaking invasion of a fictional country in the Middle East.With Modern Warfare, Call of Duty became bigger, more intense, more modern.

In terms of scenario, too: modern warfare and terrorism themes struck a chord in 2007, heralding a temporary departure from World War II in first-person shooters. And the multiplayer mode combined the best of both worlds: motivating level ups and fun killstreaks with a proven server list on the PC (and mods!) without the peer-2-peer technique introduced with part 2. What fun I had back then with my submachine gun and the (then still new) spray-&-pray method!

Today, Modern Warfare is often remembered by gamers only for its trend towards linear levels, including persistent “Return to mission area!” warnings, and eternally following shooting gallery enemies. Or it’s blamed along with Halo for questionable innovations like auto-regenerating health and a limit of two weapons at a time. Alas.

Annual sequels have continued to spin the concept introduced in Modern Warfare, but in my eyes have learned the wrong lessons: more pace, more bombast, more explosions, even first-person player deaths were simply multiplied in the sequel. But that near-perfect level design of the first? That got a bit lost between all the crash-boom action. And that’s why Call of Duty was never as good as the first Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

No other Call of Duty has “controversy” written all over it like Modern Warfare 2. The airport mission No Russian remains a community bone of contention to this day – as a tasteless glorification of violence or a bold provocation. But Modern Warfare 2 is a remarkable game even apart from the controversy. It’s not very often that a gaming milestone is followed up by a milestone that is almost as big.

Modern Warfare 2 goes one better everywhere: the story is more extensive and varied, characters and conflicts from part 1 are taken up and put into a much larger context. There is betrayal, loss and great emotions. And the multiplayer also continues what Modern Warfare 1 started: a complete turnaround in the way multiplayer progression works. The result is a gigantic success. In our rankings, the games that have changed the gaming world beyond their series usually end up at the top. And that’s where Modern Warfare 2 does quite well.
