The 19-year-old Twitch streamer Scarlett aka “xoQueenScar” shows Counter Strike: Global Offensive among other games on her channel. She is also active on TikTok, where she posts short clips from her streams. Now one of the videos went viral, in which she was kicked out of the game by her teammates, apparently because of her gender.
Here’s the situation:
- With just over 1000 followers, Scarlett is one of the smaller streamers on Twitch
- On TikTok she posts clips from her streams and short clips for her more than 6000 followers
- These are often about experiences she has as a woman online
- Now a clip went viral of her supposedly getting kicked out of a game in CS:GO because of her gender
On Twitch, streamers and streamers often make “clips”: short recordings that are quite often taken out of context. Here is the most popular clip on Twitch:
Team kicks streamer out after she speaks out
This is what can be seen in the clip: In the short clip, the streamer shows how she is kicked out of the game during a match by her teammates using a vote. This happens immediately after she said something in voice chat.
One of her teammates responded to her voice by repeatedly asking, “Did I hear a girl?” and another says she should get out of “his” game. Scarlett therefore relates the expulsion to her gender.
German streamer and DJane “Sinitica” is also trying to assert herself in a male-dominated scene. She recently showed what disgusting messages she receives from guys in the process.
It’s not the first time: Scarlett posted the clip titled “Why csgo is not for women, part 3”. In other videos, she had shown similar events. These are apparently not limited to Counter-Strike. (via TikTok)
The clip goes viral: Four days after Scarlett posted the video on TikTok, it has already racked up 2.2 million views (as of 07/25/2022). By comparison, her videos usually tend to reach several hundred to a few thousand viewers.
On 07/24, the clip is also posted in the CS:GO subreddit, where it reaches nearly 30,000 upvotes (as of 07/25/2022). The comments are full of discussions about the content. The video has also appeared in other subreddits.
Female players tell about their own experiences
These are the reactions: The video has thousands of comments on TikTok and Reddit. Many seem to just find the teammates’ behavior funny or even support it.
Sad everyday life: Others see nothing special in it. It’s just an average CS:GO lobby. Some even find the team comparatively nice. The shooter has long had the reputation of having a particularly toxic community (via Reddit, TikTok).
What other women say: Female gamers in particular seem to recognize themselves in the clip. They talk about their own experiences. Sometimes you would be thrown out directly, like Scarlett. In other cases, the players would keep you on the team, but would be abusive in voice chat.
Some even state they never use a game’s voice chat for these reasons or don’t play online at all. They also express frustration that such behavior rarely has consequences for fellow players. (via Reddit)
It is not clear from the short clip whether the footage is staged or whether there may have been other reasons for the ejection. However, the comments reveal that he hit a nerve.
The voting system is also criticized in this context. With it, players can be thrown out of the match – as in this case, supposedly for no reason – by a simple vote. Other games have already abolished it for this reason. It remains to be seen whether CS:GO will draw consequences from this and similar incidents.
Twitch star Imane “Pokimane” Anys has also experienced hostility online. Now she needs a break from streaming.
